Itinerary for Dalvaro Art Painting Holidays in Spain

This is an example of our proposed itinerary for a beginner/intermediate watercolour or acrylic painting week, aimed at giving you a flavour of what you can expect on your holiday. There are many factors that can change our planned week, but we will endeavour to create the opportunity to vary the painting as much as possible to give everyone a balanced week of learning basic tenets and techniques to cover perspective and composition, with a mixture of landscape and town scenes, plein air and studio work, dependent, of course, on the individual teaching plan. Please see your chosen course date for each individual tutor or course for a more specific itinerary.

We offer free transfers from Valencia or Alicante airports. Valencia airport is about a 70 minute drive and Alicante is about 85 minutes.

Day one:

Sunday arrival. Transfer from the airport to Las Orquideas.  Depending on arrival time we have welcome drinks and refreshments, or evening meal, at Las Orquideas. While we meet the other guests and tutor, tour of property and receive an outline for the week ahead.

Course day one: Monday

The first morning is usually the “get to know each other” day, with a morning introduction, presentation of your free art pack and demonstration by the tutor in the studio or by the pool. After lunch we practice in the studio or garden, then perhaps take a walk down to the town for a tour or to the local monastery, while awaiting the evening meal at Las Orquideas.

Course day two: Tuesday

A full day trip to Xativa castle where we spend the morning up at the castle, where we spend an exhilarating time overlooking the town and the surrounding countryside. An exercise in perspective and colour shading of the medieval stonework in the fortifications. After a typical Valencian lunch in the castle restaurant, we continue painting or take our sketchbooks on a tour of the older parts of the town, including a visit to see the Collegiate Basillica and the 13th century church of Saint Felix. Returning to Las Orquideas for a well earned evening meal.

Course day three: Wednesday

A trip to go landscape painting within the magnificent Valle D’Albaida, with its many mountains, rivers, ravines and castle ruins amid the majestic Mediterranean pines which are so prolific in this area. To include exercises in adding detail, creating texture and adding visual interest to bring your painting alive.

 Course day four: Thursday

On location today, to Bocairent, the town built on a hill, where the houses look as if they are stacked one on another. We start with a view from outside the town to give a panoramic impression to include the town, with the church on top and the magnificent surrounding countryside. With excersises in linear and multiple point perspective, shading and creating strong tonal contrasts for the three dimensional effect, required for that striking feeling of depth. Followed by lunch in a local restaurant in the town. Continuing with a sketching tour of the inner town before returning to Las Orquideas.

 Course day five: Friday

A morning spent in the studio finalising the weeks work, with additional exercises as requested by the students. Lunch is followed by a final get together in the studio to show off the weeks work,  with a presentation certificate from the tutor. Then it`s glad-rags on for an evening tapas meal in the town, or stay at home for our final meal together.
