Itinerary for the 6 nights & 5 days – Walking with a sketchbook “Following Sorolla”:
This is a guideline only, as there maybe factors outside our control which can easily force changes to be made, these are just some of the locations which we use. We go with the delightful Sue Ford on a short tour of some of the finest sights found in this part of the Valle D’Albaida. The idea of this “Walking with a Sketchbook” is to keep an unforgettable, personalised sketchbook memory of your holiday, to accompany any photographs you may take. The walking is easy to moderate, usually through the narrow streets of the tiny, local pueblos, where you sketch the the sights of personal attraction to you, that catch your eye along the way. The ornate doorways, churches, statues, narrow streets, tumbledown homes of a bygone age, or the decorative flowerpot filled balconies, which abound in this part of rural Spain. All with the helpful advice of Sue Ford, as the walks take us along ancient routes, past olive groves, vineyards and open countryside connecting the tiny hamlets.
Including a short tour of the route of Joaquin Sorolla, Valencia’s most famous artist. Following in the footsteps of this great artist in and around the city of his birth.
Our transport, which will have taken us to a drop off point at the beginning of the walk, will be ready to collect us at the end of each mornings gentle stroll, and then head off for a picnic lunch or to a local bar for refreshments, before either continuing our walk or returning to Las Orquideas. On our return Sue will, in the studio, show us how to add colour to the sketches to enhance the memories even more.
Please note that this holiday is restricted to only six participants.
Sunday 13th March:
Late afternoon/ early evening pick up from Alicante airport, with transfer directly to “Las Orquideas”. After being shown to your rooms we have drinks and nibbles, getting to know each other while waiting for our evening meal.
Monday 14th March:
Breakfast at about 8.00, then on the road to our first location. After a ten minute drive we arrive with a view of the “plantano”, and looking across the water towards the mountain of Benicadell, as seen from the gardens of Las Orquideas. Our transport leaves us and, after a few quick sketches, we move on across the road and follow the route into the town of Bellus. Taking photos and making sketches along the way. we continue on through the town towards the river. Maybe stopping for a coffee on the way. We then follow the river through the mountains and on to La Peña El Aventador and La casa de Lum, where our transport is waiting for us, before returning to “Las Orquideas”. Perhaps just relaxing or working on our sketches before our evening meal.
Tuesday 15th March:
Breakfast at about 8.00, then on the road to our second location. A fantastic start to the day, with a drive to Valencia City. Where we follow in the footsteps of Valencia’s most famous artist, Joaquin Sorolla. Our sketching trail begins at the Silk Exchange in the neighbourhood where he was born and we finish at The Museum of Fine Arts, San Pio V. Visiting some of the sites around the city associated with Sorolla and his works, such as the Market Steps and La Playa de la Malvarrosa. With so much to see in this wonderfully artistic area we spend all day here, returning to Las Orquideas in the evening.
Wednesday 16th March:
A visit to the ancient town of Carricola, beginning with a hillside walk amongst sculptures set into the natural landscape. This permanent outdoor exhibition consists of 70 paintings and sculptures by 50 different artists, which are dispersed along two routes: “The Ravine Castle” and “The Ways of the Water”. First we follow the hillside route to the Castle, where we can view the agricultural layout of the land in the valley far below. This circular tour returns us to the town in time for refreshments. We then leave the cafès and bars behind us and walk in the opposite direction, to follow the artwork along “The Ways of the Water” and back to our transport to take us home.
Thursday 17th March:
After breakfast we go on a short drive to the opposite side of La Valle D’Allbaida, where the transport leaves us in Adzenata d’Albaida, one of the small towns which sit on the side the Sierra Mariolla. After a sketching tour of this typical old rural pueblo, followed, of course by refreshments, we follow a two kilometre route out of town, either on foot or in the transport, and head to the main town of Albaida itself, where we have lunch. Then a short walk through the ancient narrow back streets to the old town set up on top of the hill. Our transport is waiting to return us to the villa, Las Orquideas.
Friday 18th March:
After breakfast we go on a forty minute drive to another superb location. Our first sight of Bocairent, a 15th century hillside town, is a fantastic panoramic view from across the valley. Our transport leaves us and after a few quick sketches we move on down the track, crossing over the bridge and follow the route up into the town. Taking photos and making sketches along the way. We continue exploring the town after lunch, where our transport is waiting for us, before returning to Las Orquideas.
