Arnold Lowrey – Tips and watercolour effects –
(Final date not decided)
This is a guideline only, as there maybe factors outside our control which can easily force changes to be made. Please remember that Arnold likes to work in the studio prior to going plein-air painting, this is to allow everyone to practise his techniques before venturing on the outdoor painting trips which are usually late morning sessions, for two to three hours.
Get to know each other. Morning usually begins in the studio with an introduction to the course, presentation of your free art pack and a discussion about the materials you will be using. Followed by a demonstration showing the process that Arnold uses to produce one of his fine paintings.
After lunch the students decide on the types of paintings they would prefer and make preperations for the following day’s painting session.
After breakfast a mornings trip out to Xativa castle, lunch at the castle, we either continue our session within the castle grounds or take a trip down to the town itself and paint or sketch in the old quarter.

Painting Holidays in Spain with Dalvaro Art Courses - Xátiva ViewDuring the Muslim era was called Medina Xateba, belonging first to Toledo, then moving to Cordoba. He was also part of Almería, of the kingdom of Taifa of Denia, of Murcia and Valencia. During his recent times as Islamic city, it was capital of a Kora: province on some 50 populations. In the Muslim period Xàtiva is known by some as the cradle of paper in Europe, Abu MASAIFA hand. After the conquest (Jaime I respected the mosque) became the capital of the Interior of the Júcar, which lasted from 1244 to 1707. The border with the government of Valencia was the Júcar River and reached as far south and Jijona Villena. Several of their populations were distinguished at this time, such as Gandia or Denia.
Painting Holidays in Spain with Dalvaro Art Courses - Xátiva HospitalDuring the War of Spanish Succession in 1707, Xàtiva suffered the siege and subsequent attack of the Bourbon troops under General d'Asfeld on the orders of Philip V. The city was prepared for the worst with the help of the people in the villages adjacent, peasants, setabenses own, many other austracistas supporters and a regiment of British troops. Leading the defense was General Purroy offering great resistance during the early days but to no avail because the guns brought from Almansa and the regiment of 12,000 French achieved their goal, not without heavy casualties on the French troops caused by courage and commitment of these people, Maulets. When they managed to create a breach in the wall in the Portal dels Banys, at the height of what is now the Plaza de la Bassa, and there came Sant Francesc street address and south on the street that leads to St. Augustine. Much blood and dead in the streets there was, highlighting the killing of women and children in the church of St. Augustine and an exemplary punishment was burned, people exterminated and his name changed to Nueva Colonia San Felipe. The city was left in ruins and almost uninhabited for a year until it began to repopulate and recover some of its luster. Today we still have great monuments that have survived the slaughter of this character Philip of Anjou, Felipe V. He became provincial capital of 1822 to 1833, thanks to the perseverance and work of one of its illustrious sons: Joaquin Lorenzo Villanueva, who also contributed to recover the September 28, 1820, the name of Játiva to the population.
Today we stay close to home, to paint at one of locations within a short drive of Las Orquideas. The afternoon session is spent in the gardens and/or the studio.
