The city was prepared for the worst with the help of the people in the villages adjacent, peasants, setabenses own, many other austracistas supporters and a regiment of British troops. Leading the defense was General Purroy offering great resistance during the early days but to no avail because the guns brought from Almansa and the regiment of 12,000 French achieved their goal, not without heavy casualties on the French troops caused by courage and commitment of these people, Maulets. When they managed to create a breach in the wall in the Portal dels Banys, at the height of what is now the Plaza de la Bassa, and there came Sant Francesc street address and south on the street that leads to St. Augustine. Much blood and dead in the streets there was, highlighting the killing of women and children in the church of St. Augustine and an exemplary punishment was burned, people exterminated and his name changed to Nueva Colonia San Felipe. The city was left in ruins and almost uninhabited for a year until it began to repopulate and recover some of its luster. Today we still have great monuments that have survived the slaughter of this character Philip of Anjou, Felipe V. He became provincial capital of 1822 to 1833, thanks to the perseverance and work of one of its illustrious sons: Joaquin Lorenzo Villanueva, who also contributed to recover the September 28, 1820, the name of Játiva to the population.
